Whether you are a book lover or just want a bookcase to display your family pictures, bookcases can make a great addition to any room in the house. The additional book shelf space can be used for display, but also to enhance the feel of your home.
What are the different Types of Bookcases?
Our Life Store has several different types of bookcases and bookshelves for your to choose from. Each can be used for different room in the house, bedroom or office to display family photos or even a center piece of collections or awards.
Ladder Bookcases
You guessed it, a ladder bookshelf or leaning bookshelves are exactly as they sounds. These book shelves are normally open ended and lean on the wall with meant to appear as a ladder or staircase with the lower shelves being deep and progressively decreasing in depth as the go higher. Because they look like steps propped up agains the wall, they have a wide variety of uses in different rooms in the house. The down side is the they do take up little more floorspace that other bookcase designs.
Closed Ended Bookshelf
The closed ended bookshelf are shelves within a opened faced box with a backing. This type of book shelf is best used when placed on a corner or to hold books as they do not provide a visual of the items contained from their sides. This are the more traditional bookcases.
Open Ended Bookcase
The open ended bookcase generally has support posts or a frame holding the shelves in a design that makes the shelves appear to be floating. These more simplistic and minimalist bookcases allow for viewing of your displayed items from all directions and are great for family photos, collections, awards, or other ornamental display items. Due to their simplistic bookshelf design they allow the focus to be on your displayed items and not on the furniture itself.
Cabinet with Bookcase
Cabinet bookcases generally have cabinets on the lower section and shelving on the upper section. The shelving are can be open ended or closed ended depending on the design aspect you are trying to achieve in your home. These furniture cabinet with bookcase are great for the living room or dining room as they provide closed storage underneath while still allowing for display on their shelving area. Normally these are great to display plates or other trinkets, but can also be used in an office for displaying books on the upper shelving area.
Desk with Bookcase
The Desk with bookcase option is great for children's room, kids room, or home office. This furniture piece is a desk attached with shelving either on the rear of the desk section or the side of the desk. Many times this useful piece furniture has multiple boxed in shelves for a variety of office storage items, or can have one single shelf over the top held my support posts.
A-frame Bookcase
The A-Frame bookcase is very similar to the ladder bookshelf, the difference is that this bookcase design has a ribbed section on the rear which is vertical and the front post are angled; hence their a-frame design bookshelf. These a-framed bookshelves do not need to lean on the wall as the ladder bookcases do.
Bookcase Headboard
When you like to read in bed, these bookcase headboards provide shelving to store your books easily in the headboard of the bed. But it's not just for book storage, but a wide variety of other items can be stored or displayed on these headboards with bookcases. They are great for family photos, and much more. Some of these headboards have closed cabinetry for storage as well.
Bookcase Materials, which should I buy?
Bookcases can come in a variety of materials, the most common being a form of solid wood, wood veneer laminated particle panels (wood finish), or a form of metal in combination with wood and glass shelves.
Common types of solid woods used to make a bookcase are pine wood, cherry wood, bamboo, walnut, or a reclaimed wood.
Many times the ladder style bookshelves and A-frame designed bookcases have a frame made from either metal or wood and can have glass or wood shelves.
Which material is best for your really depends on the look or style you are trying to achieve in room. Open sided bookcase seem to be very popular for displaying pictures, artwork or collectibles or even souvenirs. The open ended shelves allow better viewing from angles, where as close ended bookshelves are more commonly used for books as they hold their placement better.
